Pro-life blog buzz 1-30-15

 from Jill Stanek.com

by Susie Allen, host of the blog, Pro-Life in TN, and Kelli

Live Action News reports on a perfect example of twisted pro-abortion logic from The Abortion Resource Handbook, in which author K Kaufmann tells teens that keeping their pregnancy and abortion a secret is positive and shows signs of maturity. (That’s interesting – I always thought hiding things from people was more a sign of an immature person with an inability to deal with the consequences of one’s own actions):
However sad or angry you feel right now, keep in mind that not involving a parent is often a sign of maturity – that you are able to make and take responsibility for your own decisions. Keeping the pregnancy and abortion a secret may even turn out to be a positive experience. For many young women, it may be one of the first times they make an important or life-changing decision on their own, and they may feel more confident and better about themselves as a result.
One of the first life-changing decisions… secondary, of course, to the decision to have sex in the first place.

Abstinence Clearinghouse reports on a Danish study which reveals a possible link between hormonal birth control use and brain tumors:
The study examined 316 women with glioma and found that women who used contraceptives containing only progestin for more than five years had a risk that was 2.4 times higher than the control group.

Wesley J. Smith shares his 2015 bioethics predictions. Check out how he did on his predictions from last year.

Bound4Life gives an overview of important court cases in the pro-life movement:
Over the past seven weeks, three separate federal appeals courts have heard important cases related to abortion policy in America — all with far-reaching implications for pre-born lives.
Pro-Life Wisconsin reports that Republicans legislators are conducting an audit on Planned Parenthood who has “publicly stated that if they are audited, they will likely have to close their birth control clinics in the state”:
Pro-Life Wisconsin applauds this bold legislative effort to root out waste, fraud and abuse in Wisconsin’s Medicaid family planning program. It is bad enough that these family planning monies fuel surgical and chemical abortions in our state. It is intolerable that Wisconsin taxpayers are ripped off in the process!

After Abortion refers to a survey showing 49% believe abortion is immoral, yet 51% want to keep it legal anyway. How about that for compartmentalization? Could this be due to society’s widespread misunderstanding of “judging” the actions of others, or could it be that they want it around in case they decide to do the immoral thing?

At National Review, Dr. Michael J. New writes that NARAL must be getting desperate, because they’re now conducting their own polls on Americans’ views on abortion:
[T]he poll, which purports to show strong support for legal abortion in four congressional districts, is deceptive. That NARAL increasingly feels the need to conduct its own polls at all is a striking shift in and of itself. But it’s the change in the questions those polls ask that should really raise eyebrows….The alternatives were 1) abortion is morally acceptable and should be legal; 2) personally opposed to abortion, but it should remain legal; and 3) abortion should be illegal.

A plurality of respondents preferred the second option, and NARAL quickly announced that the first and second options combined commanded majority support. Of course, the three questions did not allow for much nuance. Specifically, the poll did not ask about the 20-week abortion ban or other incremental pro-life laws that tend to poll well.

Pro-life blog buzz 1-27-15

from Jill Stanek.com

At New Feminism, Marjorie Murphy Campbell shares her wonderful sign photos from the West Coast Walk for Life in San Francisco. She notes the march has become safer and has grown in size in the city that is most known for its outrageous displays during marches.

Saynsumthn’s Blog has an update on St. James Episcopal Church in Wichita, Kansas, which hosted a “Chili for Choice” to raise funds for Planned Parenthood. In an attempt to demonize pro-life protesters, the church posted on social media an anonymous woman’s claim that PP provides needed health services to low-income women (as if other health providers don’t) and that PP is not “evil.” Despite this, on the day of the event, participants were greeted with photos of abortion victims – which PP kills to the tune of more than 300k a year (an inconvenient truth, for St. James) – outside the church.

A Drop in the Ocean says that as the excitement of the March for Life begins to wear off, don’t go home and forget why you marched:

[O]ur victory over the culture of death depends on winning the overall war, not just a single battle each year….
Maybe it’s… making a plan for how to integrate your pro-life beliefs into your job…. Whatever it is, just do it.

At ProLife365, Kevin Kukla gives his take on Pope Francis’ recent comments about being Catholic and having children “like rabbits.”

Pro-Life Action League’s Eric Scheidler is reaching out to abortion workers in an attention-grabbing way – by highlighting the criminality often involved in legalized abortion:

Today — the forty-second anniversary of the Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade decision — the Pro-Life Action League sent an special care package to every abortion clinic in the United States.

Inside: a picture of Naresh Patel, the Oklahoma abortionist arrested last month, along with a pair of plastic handcuffs and a signed note from me reading, “Could you be next? If you want to get out of the abortion business, give me a call.” I also included my cell phone number.

Pro-Life Wisconsin believes the much-discussed Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Act – which was removed at the last minute on the eve of the March for Life – was deeply flawed in the first place.

ProWomanProLife posts a chilling video of assisted suicide – in about two minutes flat – in Belgium. Is it supposed to be comforting that a doctor can kill someone in a ten-minute house call?

Third time is also a charm....my third trip to DC for the March for Life

This was my third opportunity to attend the March for Life in Washington DC. The first two times I hitched a ride compliments of KY Right to Life who take several buses. The cost is reasonable and it is a package deal. Ed Cecil of Owensboro KY has organized buses ever since 1973. They were very gracious to add me to their list and since I was traveling alone; paired me up with nice ladies to share a  room with and  took great care of me. I appreciated the opportunity to cross something off my bucket list. It was exciting to be part of the event that draws such a crowd and is routinely ignored by the MSM.

This year the Mid South District of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod asked me to go and represent them. My husband said he would go as well. We had frequent flyer miles and used them to prevent a long car trip. Yah! So with my husband along, who has a great sense of direction, I felt free to deviate from the group. We rode the Metro in and attended the Pro Life Con hosted by Family Action Council.  I met up with my long distance online boss, Jill Stanek. I am a contributor to Jill Stanek.com and now the new venture Stanek Report. The weather was rather nice and I felt somewhat cheated since I have marched in snow, rain and sleet to prove how hardy I am even though not part of the millennial generation that was clearly the majority there.

A side  story that gathered much media attention was the last minute scuttling of a major pro life bill that would ban abortions after 20 weeks gestation. This  polled to represents that 56% of Americans favoring lowering the ban to 20 weeks. The abandonment of the bill  was leaked the night before the March and the news junkies who follow social media caught wind of it. Jill Stanek felt so strongly about it that she told a reporter from Bloomberg that for the first time in her pro life activism career she was willing to get arrested over it.  She made a Facebook event invite asking for people to show up at Rep. Renee Ellmers (R) North Carolina's office at 3PM following the March to protest since she had been identified as the one leading the effort to bail.

We hurried over to the event and on the way  was stopped by a reporter for the CBS News and asked to give a brief interview. Of course they start with the softball questions to warm you up like...why do you march? But what they really wanted was a sound bite for the evening news about the dust up in the GOP ranks with the scrapping of the 20 week abortion ban. This caused more writers to note that the CBS gave 15 seconds to the March but the majority of that was about the bill controversy.

After the March, we stayed for the Life Conference hosted by the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod.  This two day conference was packed with information and ways to stay engaged as we head home and back to  our everyday lives. I had heard many of the speakers before and even had the opportunity to lobby with Dr. Donna Harrison in Tennessee. However, I was informed, invigorated and renewed my commitment to the cause of life.

So if you have never been to the March for Life in DC, add that to your bucket list.

ProWomanProLife denounces the expansion of abortion in Canada via RU-486 “without any democratic process.”

At ProLife365, Kevin Kukla discusses the life-saving potential of organ donation – but also lists four reasons why you might want to “rethink” your organ donor status.

Secular Pro-Life gets behind the faith-based Focus on the Family organization’s #iseetwo campaign. Social media can save lives.

Survivors encourages us to have the same urgency in the pro-life movement that the Civil Rights movement displayed. We have made progress but we must have the sense of urgency and perseverance to see it through after the March for Life is over.

Saynsumthn discusses the “communist anarchist group Stop Patriarchy” which plans to counter protest Black, pro-life “fascist” Christian preachers who refer to abortion as Black genocide. Stop Patriarchy claims “Abortion is liberating – NOT ‘genocidal.'”

Reflections of a Paralytic was featured on a radio program discussing the best and worst of events occurring in the realm of bioethics in 2014.

Right to Life of Michigan says the United Nations is honoring notorious abortionist Willie Parker (pictured above) for showing “courage” in “defending human rights for women.” Interestingly, they avoid the “A” word at all costs, when Parker makes his living robbing preborn children of their human rights.

Wesley J. Smith addresses the false idea that pro-lifers only care about children before birth. Disclosing that he never engaged personally with pro-lifers until he became involved with the fight against assisted suicide, Smith says he found pro-lifers to be completely selfless in their care and support for women, men and born children. Smith says that he noticed one thing that seems to be behind the pro-abortion movement’s rhetoric – money:
Every time a woman doesn’t abort at PP, it costs the organization money. In fact, the group is apparently so financially reliant on terminations, that when a new Texas law forced clinics to stop performing abortions, some PP facilities closed down. So much for being about birth control and cancer screening.

Facts, not demonization.

Moreover, some notable pro-choicers are coming out as positively pro-abortion. Indeed, the argument is now being made in some quarters that fewer abortions is nothing to celebrate because it implies there is a moral problem in the first place.

Standing at the Rea Sea and trusting God.....faith tested and remaining strong

David and Kathy
With her usual optimism and strong faith in God, Kathy Hardin, White House, TN is facing her latest challenge……cancer. Diagnosed with breast cancer a year and a half ago and now in her leg, pelvis and spine, she continues her normal routine in a wheelchair. Kathy has homeschooled all nine of her children, with six still in the process. She also finds time to tutor a friend’s child.

Kathy and her husband David have resided in White House over 20 years. Their entire family is active in many activities putting their faith to work in everyday life.

Five years ago, the Hardins undertook a step of faith when they worked and fund raised to adopt a young child from Armenia who suffers from spina bifida. Before the adoption could be completed, 3 year old Karene became critically ill. She was in need of surgery, but developed meningitis and lost over 20 pounds.

On faith, Kathy flew to Armenia and completed the adoption in record time. What occurred next was nothing short of a miracle. Karene’s medical needs could not be met in the hospital that lacked basic necessities. Kathy flew home on a commercial flight with her critically ill child and Vanderbilt hospital completed the needed surgery and care. Karene is now 8 and an active member of the family giving her mom tips in how to careen her wheel chair.

Kathy and David have always been the first to help others, whether it is feeding the homeless or hosting orphans. Now her friends are helping them. David is currently on an unpaid leave of absence from his job to care for Kathy. A  Facebook page called Help Kathy Hardin has been set up detailing ways to help them.

In typical form Kathy sees this through her faith lens as another miracle.

“What is a miracle is the chance to bring glory to God. So if I am healed then He gets the glory for the miracle. If I am not healed then I have the opportunity to show that I serve a God that I can have total trust in to have it all under control.”

Pro Life Blog Buzz for January 16, 2015

by Susie Allen, host of the blog, Pro-Life in TN, and Kelli

40 Days for Life shares a compelling story from a woman who justified her work at Planned Parenthood as “I’m just the bookkeeper” until the day she received an invoice that pricked her heart:
“The invoice was to Planned Parenthood from the local morgue. It was for $350.” As she scanned the invoice to see what it was for, the reality of abortion hit her. She continued, “The service listed was in bold letters that pierced my heart: CREMATION SERVICE FOR 150 POUNDS OF MEDICAL WASTE…. [T]he question I had to ask myself as I stared at that invoice was what first got me involved in the pro-life movement. The question that pierced my heart was: How many babies have to be aborted to add up to 150 pounds of ash?”

Jivin Jehoshaphat adds a detail that we missed in our recent post about Arizona abortionist Gabrielle Goodrick – the fact that Goodrick is on probation for substance abuse:
The Washington Post has an article by Lydia DePillis which allows Arizona abortionist Gabrielle Goodrick to whine about how hard it is to be an abortionist in Arizona after the state legislature passed some pro-life laws.Likely unbeknownst to De Pillis is that Goodrick is currently on probation for substance abuse issues (she took Fentanyl at her office in 2010) and her clinic was the subject of one of Live Action’s undercover stings regarding sex-selection abortion….

After Abortion discusses the reported link between Depo-Provera and HIV risk. This is one type of birth control frequently marketed to teens by the abortion industry:
According to the research published in The Lancet of Infectious Diseases, women who used the injectable birth control depot medroxyprogesterone acetate (more commonly known as Depo-Provera) saw a moderately increased risk of becoming infected with HIV. Depo-Provera is generally injected every three months to help prevent pregnancy. The scientists also looked at HIV risk relative to other methods of hormonal contraception, including injectable norethisterone oenanthate (also known as NET-OEN), combined oral contraceptives and progestin-only pills.
Only the Depo-Provera seemed to increase the risk of contracting HIV, by roughly 40 percent compared to women using non-hormonal birth control or no birth control at all.

Abstinence Clearinghouse warns us of two new applications (Tinder and Whisper) that teens may use and parents needs to be wary of. Both can track a user’s location, which could open the door to pedophiles.

American Life League’s Judie Brown tells us about a woman who became pregnant as a result of rape is now fighting the rapist to keep custody of her child. Amazingly enough, there is no law to protect her. The organization Hope After Rape Conception was started by a victim of rape for the purpose of creating state and federal laws to protect rape victims from this very thing. Brown encourages all pro-life legislators to support this. This is the way to show true concern for the victims of rape rather than supporting abortion of the innocent child.

Bound4Life notes the interesting timing of the release of Kelly Clarkson’s “Heartbeat Song” (set to her preborn daughter’s actual heartbeat) and the two pro-life heartbeat bills being heard in federal appeals court regarding legislation in Arkansas and North Dakota:
“For these two events to unexpectedly happen at exactly the same time should make us all ponder for a moment,” says Matt Lockett, Executive Director of Bound4LIFE.

He continues, “For ‘Heartbeat Song’ to come along, set to the heartbeat of her baby in the womb, just as two important Heartbeat laws are being defended in court — it’s either an extraordinary coincidence or a confirmation. I take it as a great confirmation that God is drawing our attention to the sanctity of life in the womb.”

The Vine draws attention to the abortion industry’s attempts at normalizing abortion – in this case, by creating a play about it:
[T]he pro-aborts are attempting to make a dramatic production of abortion stories from women. No, seriously. Spawning from the “1 in 3 campaign” which claims 1 in 3 women will have an abortion, the newest attempt to normalize murdering your child will be a play, “Out of Silence,” that pro-aborts hope to show across the country. In an interview with Salon (because, of course) one of the pro-aborts behind the “Out of Silence” actually stated that “Some of it is very funny.”

ProLife365 gives six answers to the common pro-abortion argument that claims abortion is better than a child being raised in poverty.

Priests for Life’s Kevin Burke is excited about the introduction of The Shockwave Initiative, which “will reveal how abortion impacts not only the child, the Mom, and the Dad, but entire families, including grandparents and siblings” and so forth. The initiative will “present[] a vision and resources for communicating this in a new way to our churches, families and nation devastated by abortion loss.”

Secular Pro-Life comments on the amazing story of Martin Pistorius (pictured above), who was considered in a persistent vegetative state for over a decade but claims he was fully aware of everything going on around him: Mr. Pistorius’ story ends well, but I cannot begin to imagine what he went through.I can think of only one thing worse than hearing “I hope you die,” and that is hearing “We are withdrawing your hydration and nutrition.”
Mr. Pistorius is not the first person to be misdiagnosed as a hopeless case. But the fact that it took twelve years to obtain a correct diagnosis has disturbing implications — how many families have the strength to wait that long? How many doctors would be supportive for that long? How many would instead urge the family to “let go” and end their loved one’s life prematurely?

ProLifeBlogs links to a post from Life Site News noting that Obamacare is requiring colleges to provide birth control, sterilizations and abortion producing drugs to students and employees. This greatly expands the original, publicized intent of the law.

Life Training Institute shares an article from The Failed Atheist on the oft-heard saying regarding a pregnancy: “Just as long as it’s healthy.” Of course everyone wants a healthy baby, but what does the Christian faith say about loving those who have less than perfect health?
This is not a normal way to view ones children but part of a dehumanizing culture that has made an idol out of health and wellbeing. We have trouble understanding that someone who may be in poor health or have a disability can be happy, our assumption is that those things equal a sub-par human existence which is not necessarily true. You do not need to be a healthy human being to be a good, influential or heroic one….

Bound4Life gives an overview of Wednesday’s arguments “in the latest challenge to Texas’ so-called pro-life law of the century (passed as H.B. 2),” in which “a three-judge panel of the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals heard the case Whole Woman’s Health v. Lakey.” What is good is that the health risks of abortion to women is a point of discussion.

The Vine shares some pro-life updates including the proposed legislative initiatives coming out of the new Congress of 2015.

40 Days for Life lists the many January pro-life events/marches happening so that you can attend and take a stand for life.

The Guiding Star Project discusses post-partum depression from a man’s perspective.

Live Action News lauds the good work of the 18 states Guttmacher currently rates as hostile to abortion. Is your state among them (pictured right; click to enlarge)? If not, what can you do to get your state this badge of honor in 2015?

Americans United for Life is still hard at work defending the conscience rights of Americans not to be forced under Obamacare to pay for life-ending drugs and devices:
While Congressional hearings look into admitted deceptions that made possible the passage of Obamacare, too little attention is being paid to the reality that the Obama Administration is doing everything it can to force unwilling, conscientious Americans to pay for drugs and devices that can end the lives of developing human beings,” said Dr. Yoest. “As a result, AUL has filed now 24 briefs to support pro-life Americans who are victims and potential victims of governmental abuse of power against the First Amendment conscience rights of Americans.”

Secular Pro-Life has discovered some interesting nuggets in Planned Parenthood’s latest annual report. For instance, PP hails the box office flop Obvious Child as a “major victory.” They also boast of an increased college campus presence, bringing them to over 200 chapters. However, there are more than 4 times as many pro-life college campus groups. SPL’s personal favorite is the fact that PP credits their own organization with preventing an extra 1,000 unplanned pregnancies even though they show a decrease in dispensing contraceptives.

Suzy B remembers the remarkable story of a premature baby who was saved by a freezer bag:
Baby Ellis was born at 24 weeks, when he could have been legally aborted. Instead, his parents and doctors fought to save him and he is now a “happy and cheeky” 1 year-old.

Wesley J. Smith points out that while Slate is publishing photos of babies just seconds out of the womb, there are “some very prominent bioethicists – past and present – certain… these littlest people are killable – either because they are denigrated as human “non-persons” or because they have terminal or seriously disabling conditions.”

Survivors of the Abortion Holocaust show how we can have a conversation with those in the “mushy middle” on abortion, eliminating the middle ground so that they truly choose a side.

Real Choice recalls the anniversary of Kermit Gosnell and his “House of Horrors.” The failure of the Pennsylvania Department of Health to investigate complaints was nothing short of a political move.

ProLifeBlogs links to The Black Kettle’s post that says 650 babies are euthanized yearly in the Netherlands.

Saynsumthn’s Blog tells of the many organized (and fully boozed) pro-abortion celebrations planned around the country, marking 42 years of Roe v. Wade. Some are even hosted by liberal churches.

Bound4Life shares their top ten milestones for life in 2014, including the Hobby Lobby ruling as well as pro-life laws enacted across the country, and also some you might not typically see on a pro-life milestones list.

Big Blue Wave expresses skepticism about the remote birth control device that is supposed to work for 16 years.

Culture Campaign comments on “nonprofit” Planned Parenthood’s latest annual report. Abortion numbers and taxpayer funding increased while contraceptive numbers decreased. Unsurprisingly, adoption referrals are scarce:
In its annual government-required report, Planned Parenthood indicated that it performed 327,653 abortions (that’s nearly 500 more children killed than the previous year), and served 147,210 fewer birth control customers while receiving an increase in taxpayer funding to $528.4 million (41% of Planned Parenthood’s total revenue). The report indicated that Planned Parenthood, which the government classifies as a “non-profit” organization, had an annual profit of $127.1 million. For the year, Planned Parenthood’s services to pregnant women were 94% abortions; abortions outnumbered adoption referrals by a factor of 174 to 1.

Euthanasia Prevention Coalition is pleased to announce that another “Dr. Death” has lost his license: Lawrence Egbert, a leader of the Final Exit Network, has lost his medical license in Maryland. After a two year review, the Maryland Board of Physicians revoked his medical license after deciding that Egbert’s actions were unethical and illegal. Egbert has said that he plans to appeal.
Expose Abortion shares a sobering quote about saline abortion (which shows the humanity of the preborn child) from former abortionist Paul Jarrett: This type of abortion was then done by hypertonic saline injection. In laymen’s terms this meant injecting a very caustic salt solution into the amniotic sac which the baby swallows, causing his death. Labor begins 12 – 36 hours later.

At Live Action News, Susan Michelle recounts the plethora of emails from pro-abortion professionals who think of 2014 as a bad year for abortion rights, and are fearful of what pro-lifers may do in 2015.

Kansans for Life is proud of the pro-life victories in their state in 2014. We offer our congratulations:
Pro-lifers can proudly claim credit for the fact that pro-life candidates won all of Kansas’ statewide offices, along with 94 of the 125 seats in the Kansas House of Representatives in the 2014 elections. Notably, pro-life stalwarts Governor Sam Brownback and U.S. Senator Pat Roberts won re-election over their radically pro-abortion challengers. As officially reported by the Kansas Department of Health & Environment, the number of Kansas abortions dropped to 7,485 in 2013, from 7,598 in 2012(2014 numbers aren’t available until March 2015). Many reasons can be attributed to the continued drop, including the improved availability of informed consent information online and increased utilization of pregnancy care centers statewide.

Wesley J. Smith discusses the latest culture of death idea. We’ve heard of “abortion doulas,” but what about death doulas? These individuals, according to two authors, would become “suicide facilitators” by “fill[ing] a gap between treatment doctors and hospice workers.”

Josh Brahm lists his top five posts of 2014.

Clinic Quotes features a grisly story about what contractors found when they renovated an old home that once belonged to an abortionist. Under an old examining table they found the “remains of two tiny babies floating in a preservative solution inside two dusty jars with screw-on lids.” A local TV station did an interview but referred to the babies as specimens and (interestingly) did not show them on camera.

At Live Action News, Cassy Fiano writes about abortion supporters who want abortion clinics to be aesthetically pleasing, but seem unconcerned about making sure the clinics actually meet safety standards:

Give us something pink and pretty, and we’ll ignore that [clinic owner Diane] Derzis had 76 pages’ worth of health code violations, the fact that one of her clinics was forcibly closed because she sent three patients to the hospital in one day, and that, for all intents and purposes, she’s operating an illegal abortion clinic. Derzis laughably said in an interview that she thanks God for her safe abortion, yet she does nothing at all to provide safe abortions for women who come to her for help.

But oh boy, is her clinic pretty! [pictured] …

Whole Woman’s Health has had multiple violations, including rusty instruments and expired medicine, but who cares? They’ve got herbal tea and recliners! The walls are decorated with inspirational quotes! Surely that tea and those pretty walls will make women feel better when they find out that an abortionist was poking around in their uterus with rusty equipment.

Fletcher Armstrong discusses the success of bringing the pro-life strategy to European countries, and the resulting response:
Neil Datta [is the] secretary of the European Parliamentary Forum on Population and Development (an abortion advocacy organization). Referencing an interview with Mr. Datta, Women’s eNews (a feminist online publication) wrote:

U.S. anti-abortion groups appear to be sharing their expertise with their European counterparts. Datta cites the example of the Center for Bio-Ethical Reform, based in Knoxville, Tenn., which ran a poster campaign that links photos of genocide and holocaust next to images of aborted fetuses. Countries, such as Slovakia and Poland, used a similar ad campaign to promote their agenda at the European Parliament and in public squares, said Datta.

Big Blue Wave is astonished at an anti-smoking ad being shown in Finland, which discusses the harm that smoking can bring to preborn children. This type of ad has been seen before in the U.S. and Canada, but I haven’t seen any in recent years:

ProLife365 has a humorous post on the benefits of having a large family.

Saynsumthn’s Blog reports on the pro-abortion Unitarian Church’s Alternative Gift List for 2014. Topping their list: Give to a center for abused children or perhaps donate to Planned Parenthood, the nation largest promoter and provider of abortions. Talk about the ultimate child abuse – death by dismemberment – and the ultimate in compartmentalization.

Right to Life of Michigan is deeply disappointed that a 20-hour, all night session to address over 100 bills in the state left two bills on coercive abortions to die without a vote being taken. They will have to be reintroduced next year.

Wesley J. Smith discusses two recent cases in which pregnant women – declared brain dead – are being kept artificially alive so they can deliver their babies by C-section. In one case in Milan, the family is in agreement to continue life support until the baby can be safely delivered, but in the other case in Ireland the family wants the pregnant woman and her child to be allowed to die. Smith writes:
Why the dripping disdain? Anger at Ireland’s anti-abortion laws is the pretext.
But is this case really about abortion? I understand the family can’t move on. That has got to be terribly painful. But how is the woman hurt in any way? Her life isn’t affected. She’s gone. Her body isn’t being harmed, but it is benefiting her child – just as she did before her brain failed. Should the same people think it wrong to try and save the baby in a mechanical incubator? I suspect so. Because, well, the baby should be dead.
