Oh Canada?? Canadian law allows maternity benefits for women choosing to abort....
Cross posted from Big Blue Wave, and don't think this twisted thinking cannot find it's way to the US. I am still having trouble getting my head around this thinking. Abortion before 19 weeks gestation qualifies the Canadian woman to up to 3.5 mos sick leave and if the abortion is after 20 weeks gestation she can also qualify for paid benefits under the Employment Insurance maternity leave program for up to 3.5 mos. So typically the maternity medical portion of leave is 6 weeks recovery period for normal vaginal delivery and the remaining time is bonding with baby...so who are these women bonding with since they elected an abortion?
Canada’s employment insurance guidelines reveal that a woman who aborts her child after 19 weeks gestation is eligible to receive 17 weeks of maternity leave, the same as a mother who gives birth. For an abortion occurring before 19 weeks gestation, the woman can collect sick leave for the same length of time.
Under Service Canada regulations, women who have an abortion within the first 19 weeks of pregnancy are eligible for sick leave of up to 3.5 months, because the rules do not distinguish between a miscarriage and a surgical abortion. If a woman has an abortion in the 20th week or later, benefits are paid under the EI maternity leave program. If the “birth mother” signs a declaration of the “expected or actual date of birth,” she can collect maternity benefits for up to 3.5 months.
Jim Hughes, national president of Campaign Life Coalition, told The Interim that initially, he could not believe the story, but when he confirmed the details, found it outrageous. “Giving maternity benefits to women who kill their unborn babies, who deny their own maternal instinct, makes a mockery of the program.” Hughes described as “Orwellian” the idea that a woman who has an abortion could collect “maternity benefits.”
