The Making of a Myth of Overpopulation

" Unlike almost all other American scholars of the subject, Steven Mosher, president of Population Research Institute and a China expert, does not consider population control to be a worthy goal."

Well, he's an idiot then. He cites fertility rates for developed countries, with abundant resources but fails to note that Kenya has a fertility rate of about 5 births per woman. This means the population is rapidly growing exponentially in a country that is suffering from famine and poverty after decades of drought. Furthermore women die in childbirth at a rate of 650 per 100,000 live births (Note this is compared to 12 in the US and 6 in other developed countries).

Overpopulation most certainly is not a "myth"in Kenya. Good thing no one aside from Christian conservative pro lifers puts any stock in the so-called Population Research Institute!

Furthermore.... He claims that the entire world population could survive on a land mass the size of Texas. Well, reality check time Stephen: Kenya is about the same size as Texas and contains 0.5% of the world population. And those Kenyans (which btw are rapidly reproducing) CANNOT survive on their land mass. Why not? Because its about resources, stupid. There is insufficient arable land and water in Kenya.

And you think 200 times that population in Kenya (or Texas) would be just fine? Hmmmm. Better think again.

Seriously Susie, you discredit yourself and the pro life movement with this.

Do you really not understand? Or is it that without birth control there is no answer to overpopulation so you simply pretend it doesn't exist?

I have been to Kenya twice and in June will take my 6th trip to Africa. I currently support three people in Kenya.

Kenya Population growth rate

Kenya > Demographics

Population growth rate: 2.691% (2009 est.)
Year Population growth rate Rank Percent Change Date of Information
2008 2.76 24 2008 est.
2009 2.69 25 -2.54 % 2009 est.
2010 2.69 25 0.00 % 2009 est.

Definition: The average annual percent change in the population, resulting from a surplus (or deficit) of births over deaths and the balance of migrants entering and leaving a country. The rate may be positive or negative. The growth rate is a factor in determining how great a burden would be imposed on a country by the changing needs of its people for infrastructure (e.g., schools, hospitals, housing, roads), resources (e.g., food, water, electricity), and jobs. Rapid population growth can be seen as threatening by neighboring countries.

And your point is what Susie? That the population of Kenya is increasing? That is one of the fastest growing countries (ranked 25th)?

Not good things for a country that already can't support the people it has.

Have you got anything to dispute what I've said in my comments????

Susie, perpetuating this "overpopulation is a myth" nonsense and getting in the way of Kenyan women having access to birth control negates any good deeds you are doing in Africa.

In Africa children are considered a blessing. They are very curious about America and one question I cannot answer for them.....if we are starving we give our last piece of bread to our children...in America you kill your babies in the womb and you are not even hungry...why?
I cannot answer that question.

Oh and btw, there are free condoms everywhere in Kenya and TZ.

Susie, there is also a problem of getting men to wear those condoms. Surely you are aware of this.

You cannot deny that children go hungry in Kenya because there are insufficient resources to support the population. You also cannot deny that Kenya's population continues to grow.

As long as you perpetuate this "overpopulation is a myth" nonsense you do more harm than good in Kenya.
