Planned Parenthood takes Title X money for birth control services and then requires a donation from client

An interesting and innocent question online shows the true character of Planned Parenthood. They receive Title X money from the government (i.e. the taxpayers) to dispense birth control  and they turn around and require a donation for giving them to people in need. Another online reader did a good job of pointing this out. Doesn't this just frost you.....taxpayers pay for Title X money....PP takes it to give free birth control etc. and then requires a donation....well this is the same organization that was audited in Washington State and fined $700,000. for  over billing medicaid for abortions and birth control. And this is the industry  that stands to gain handsomely from the new health care program coming our way.

Question: What is the minimum donation that Planned Parenthood requires for Birth Control? April 23rd, 2010

I have an appointment with Planned Parenthood tomorrow to get birth control. The guy on the phone said that I qualify for free birth control pills (since I’m a student and don’t have an income) but I am required to give a donation. Does anyone know the minimum donation required and what is a good amount to give? Thanks!

I’d say $10-15. This is why I hate Planned Parenthood. You are getting covered by Title X of the Public Health Service Act of 1970. This provides free-low cost reproductive health services (i.e. birth control, tests, exams etc.) to low income people (i.e. students, YES!!!). This is a government subsidy given to the clinic (Planned Parenthood); however PP preys upon us and ” requires” us pay their donation. They  will tell you tomorrow how much you have to fork over. I had to pay about $60 for the shot, but after that she went on the IUD at another clinic (run by her school, but also got Title X money) which cost me (I was a nice bf) $45 total. In the future I’d recommend finding a new clinic. It took me forever to find this, but here is a database of Title X clinics nation wide. It needs to be updated so some of the phone number might have changed… but it’s a great resource to have and I think every one should know about it! http://www.opaclearinghouse.org/db_search.asp So in a nut shell, under law you are not required to pay @@@@! (hence ‘donation’). There are other clinics out there PP is just the most known. They’ll tell you how much to pay tomorrow. I hope this helped, best of luck. Sorry if this was a rant!

Susie, Title X money allows clinics to subsidize the cost of birth control for women who do not qualify for Medicaid. It does not cover the full cost for all women.

It would be a good idea to know the program before you make invalid accusations.

Women at or below poverty level receive fully subsidized services and most of the patients are low income women who have no insurance so yes, a large percentage of women DO in fact receive FREE birth control and since we are paying $317 million in taxpayer dollars now, Susie is asking why there is a need to pay additional money. She did not misquote the facts.

She made it sound like Title X means free birth control for all. That is not the case. Some will get it free and some will get at a subsidized cost.

Why is there a need to pay additional money? Because Title X does not cover all.

Notice the words...he said I qualified for FREE because as a student I have NO INCOME but but I am REQUIRED to make a donation.

Note the other person answering stated that she could go to a school clinic and not be required to make a donation.
Also any comment about the overcharging of medicaid in WA state??

Hmmmm... The "required" sounds dubious. I suspect he said or meant "requested".

I can see how being a student with no earned income might bring them to suggest a donation. Students aren't necessarily impoverished just because they have no income.

I think that the lady Neill had the best idea...go to the database and you will see that county health depts. can provide the same service. Planned Parenthood is just better at advertising. More money don't ya know.
