Interesting thought from this author.....I did not take it that way....I took it that Bristol was pointing out that being a single teen mom is not glamorous the way it is portrayed in the media. Although the A word was not used as in abstinence...that was what I thought when she said "pause before you play. " She did not bring up adoption or abortion was warning against premarital sex. She is now an advocate of abstinence and does not promote abortion. What do you think? Let' watch it again.

Susie, that is exactly what I got from the PSA. What's her message? "Being a teen mom sucks unless you are rich like me. So don't have a baby". That means don't get pregnant. And if you do, don't try to have/raise the baby unless you are prepared for a life that's not "so pretty". The message is a mixed bag of abstinence/birth control/abortion/adoption. Anything but be a teen mom. Unless you can get rich selling your story to the tabloids.
Personally, I think Bristol Palin is a horrible choice for a spokesperson for abstinence or teen motherhood. She failed at abstinence(as did her mother and I think I read her grandmother too). And she is anything but the reality for teen motherhood. As she says in the PSA. Hence the message is very awkward. I don't know what Candies is thinking. Or the Palins for that matter.
As for what did she mean when she said "pause before you play"? She explained in an interview that "pause" could mean don't have sex or use birh control. For her personally, she says that means won't have sex AGAIN until she's married. I think it's a stretch.
Golly you are pretty hard on her.
Is it not possible once you have had sex and realize what a mistake it is to remain abstinent until marriage. Where did you get that her mother and grandmother were not abstinent until marriage. I am not saying they were but I never get that they were not.
I think Bristol has been clear on her stand about abortion. She has not taken a stand that I heard on adoption but I wish she would. But who better to say wait until marriage for sex than someone who has not done so.
I don't know who would pay for the story of a teen mom. Everyone knows so many of them, where would the story be. And Bristol freely admits she couldn't make it without the support of her family and their ability to help her financially. I think she was pretty up front about that.
Anyway, thanks for your thoughtful comments.
Is it not possible for someone to remain abstinent until marriage? Sure it's possible. It's just very rare.
Where do I get that Sarah Palin wasn't a virgin when she married? She was already pregnant with her eldest son, that's where. It's well-documented Susie.
Who better to say wait until marriage than someone who hasn't done so? Well, how about someone who has been successful at abstinence?
You don't know who would pay for the story of a teen mom? How about People Magazine and Candies for starters. Bristol is making money from the fact that she is a teen mom. What makes her story sellable is that her mother is a celebrity of sorts.
As for Bristol being clear about where she stands on abortion, I don't think she has been. Has she? And neither is the Candie's Foundation. Again, the only clear message one gets from this PSA
and from the foundation is that teen pregancy and teen motherhood are "not so pretty" (unless you are Bristol Palin) and need to be avoided. You can read lots into that, including abortion. And birh control.
You are correct, Sarah may have been with child at the time of her marriage...but to say that you cannot once you have had sex abstain until marriage is like saying an alcoholic can never abstain from drinking. I still say you are being very hard on Bristol...who better to speak to teens than someone who has been there and is still there. She is up front about how hard it would be if she did not have the resources of her family. She is countering all the glamorization of being a teen mom.
Susie, I never said that one cannot abstain from sex until marriage. I said it was rare.
That's a bad analogy you give with the alcoholic. Certainly an alcoholic can abstain from drinking. And that is normally what they have to do because they know they cannot drink safely. And certainly someone who has had an unintended pregnancy can abstain from sex. But the analogy ends there, because one CAN have sex safely. Bristol Palin's problem is not so much that she had sex. It's that she got pregnant and is now a teen mom. That's Candie's message.
And as for Bristol countering the "glamourization" of teen motherhood, the problem is that she is also doing the glamourizing. Can you not see that?
Would I rather she go on welfare? No , of course not. Are you suggesting that is her only alternative to selling story to tabloids and doing this Candies gig? It's not. She could work. It is possible you know, given that she has the fathers support along with her family's- thought I have to wonder how much they can be there for her these days. Her parents seem to rarel. Be home these days and someone back in Alaska must be taking care of Trig's special needs. Yes, you had it right: I don't think much of Sarah Palin. But I digress.....
again, Bristol is an odd choice here: I don't really think that teens relate to her. She's not their celebrity. And given that the poor have more teen pregnancies and teen motherhood, how do you think her classist message will be received by those that need to hear it most?
That aside, teen pregnancy and teen motherhood are big problems here in the US. And I think Candies message is a good one. I'm surprised though that prolifers aren't more up in arms about it given that it is pro- birth control and discourages teen mothers from keeping their babies.
