PP in Memphis finally defunded....

Official Announcement from TN RTL...Good work.

Planned Parenthood of Memphis Defunded

The Commercial Appeal reported Wednesday morning that the Shelby County Public Health Department will no longer be contracting with Planned Parenthood's Memphis affiliate, a decision which effectively ends a decades long practice in which the Tennessee Department of Health automatically awarded federal Title X family planning funds to Planned Parenthood's abortion facilities.  Tennessee Right to Life has led the public fight since 2006 to defund the nation's foremost abortion provider by directing the funds to ethical health care providers instead.

Shelby County Mayor Mark Luttrell stated that the family planning contract will awarded to Christ Community Health Services, a non-profit health service provider which does not perform or refer for abortion.   Luttrell said that a six-person team of local health care professionals and members of his administration ranked three proposals and selected Christ Community.  The contract must now be approved by the Shelby County Commission, likely within the next several weeks.

Tennesseans Respond to 2000 Abortion Decision with Increased Pro-Life Majorities at Legislature, SJR 127

Tennesseans Respond to 2000 Abortion Decision with
Increased Pro-Life Majorities at Legislature, SJR 127
(Nashville)  A decade after the Tennessee Supreme Court ruled that the Tennessee Constitution contains a "fundamental right to abortion," pro-life Tennesseans continue to respond with efforts to overturn the Court's 2001 decision.  And while much of the struggle has focused on legislative passage of SJR 127, the election of candidates supportive of the resolution has also been a key objective for pro-life leaders.  According to Tennessee Right to Life, one effect of the Court's abortion ruling is a significantly altered legislative landscape since the time of the Court's ruling in 2000.

"With each defeat of SJR 127, pro-life advocates made clear that we would remember in November," said Brian Harris, president of Tennessee Right to Life.  "Opposition has proven to be our friend in helping to strengthen the Legislature's pro-life majorities," said Harris.  "With each set back our numbers increased while those opposing SJR 127 continue to be defeated,"

Unlike efforts in some other states, the proposed amendment to the state Constitution does not seek to criminalize abortion. Instead, the language nullifies the pro-abortion-rights ruling of the state Supreme Court and makes the Constitution neutral once again on the matter of abortion. If passed this session and approved by voters in 2014, SJR 127 would return authority for abortion regulation to elected legislators who could enact any number of pro-life policies---or none.

Having passed the state Senate 5 times since 2001, the resolution was routinely defeated each time in hostile state House sub-committees.  Then in 2009, newly-elected Speaker Kent Williams made passage of SJR 127 a public priority, clearing the way for easy bi-partisan passage, 77-21.

Since 2001, the struggle to pass SJR 127 has made the issue a litmus test for the election of many state lawmakers, contributing to the defeat of some who actively opposed the pro-life measure and the election of many more who pledged to support both the pro-life movement and the measure.

"When we started the push for SJR 127 in 2001, we had just a handful of legislators that we could realistically count on to do what was needed to help the unborn," said Harris.  "But today the tide has turned and now it's our opponents who have only a handful willing to promote the pro-abortion cause,"  Harris said.  "SJR 127 demonstrates so well what can happen if you stand your ground, focus your resources and refuse to give up or go away."

TN: Pro Life Sweeps in Tuesday's election

By Peter J. Smith
NASHVILLE, Tennessee, November 4, 2010 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Tennessee pro-life advocates now have strong pro-life majorities in both chambers of the General Assembly, and the election of a new pro-life Republican governor means the way is clear for new pro-life legislation.
"We celebrate the overwhelming election of advocates in both parties who share our commitment to protecting human life in Tennessee," said Brian Harris, president of Tennessee Right to Life.  "After years of being stonewalled by pro-abortion leaders, the voices of Tennessee's pro-life majorities are at last being heard."
Tennessee Right to Life emphasized that bipartisan wins helped create strong pro-life majorities. The GOP however, managed to add to the pro-life number by winning 14 seats away from Democrats in the state House of Representatives.
The political breakdown of the House is 64 Republicans, 34 Democrats, and one (1) independent. The breakdown of the state Senate is 20 Republicans and 13 Democrats.
Last session, a strong bipartisan pro-life majority worked together to pass a measure opting the state out of the new national health care reform’s abortion mandate.  The measure (HB 2681 / SB 2686) had passed the House 70-23 and the Senate 27-3.
Democrat Gov. Phil Bredesen (who will now be succeeded by GOP Gov.-elect Bill Haslam) did not veto the law, as he faced veto-proof majorities. He let the law go into effect without his signature in May.
Tennessee pro-life leaders are especially looking forward for the opportunity to pass SJR 127, a constitutional amendment that would overturn a 2000 decision by the state Supreme Court which ruled that a right to abortion existed in the state constitution.

Sparks endorsed by TN RTL for House Seat in 49th District

NASHVILLE — The state’s oldest and largest pro-life organization has announced its official endorsement of Mike Sparks for the Tennessee House of Representatives 49th District seat.
"With the election of Sparks, constituents in this district have a unique opportunity to add a pro-life vote to the makeup of the Tennessee state House," Tennessee Right to Life President Brian Harris said in the news release.
"Mike represents the ideals of our movement, and we know that he will be an outstanding advocate for the protection of life in our state."
Election of pro-life leaders is all the more critical considering continuing debate on SJR 127, a proposed constitutional amendment resolution calling for a public vote on abortion regulation in Tennessee. The resolution has passed the House and the Senate, but must be approved again next session by a “super majority” requiring the votes of 66 members of the Tennessee House.
"We are confident that Mike Sparks' vote will always be in support of restoring common sense balance to Tennessee's current policy of abortion on demand," Harris added. "Tennessee Right to Life urges concerned pro-life supporters to work and vote for Sparks' election on November 2."

TN: Primary Endorsements for State Legislature

Primary Endorsements for State Legislature

(Nashville)  Following a legislative session marked by passage of Right to Life priorities including amendment resolution SJR 127, the political action committee of the state's leading pro-life organization has announced their endorsements for the upcoming primary elections.

"Tennesseans have made great progress in electing demonstrated pro-life leaders to the General Assembly," said Brian Harris, president of Tennessee Right to life.  "With so much at stake and the fate of unborn children in the balance, we urge every pro-life Tennessean to work and vote for the election of women and men of conscience who understand the value and dignity of every human life," said Harris.

In addition to first passage of SJR 127, a resolution to put an amendment before state voters in 2014 which would again make the Tennessee Constitution abortion-neutral, pro-life leadership and majorities in both chambers of the Legislature passed bills requiring the posting of non-coercion law in facilities where abortions are performed, ensuring that first priority in distribution of family planning funds be given to local health departments rather than abortion facilities, and establishing that abortion not be a funded benefit in exchanges to be established as part of the federal health care plan.

Abortion has become an increasingly important matter in state races following a landmark ruling by the Tennessee Supreme Court in 2000 which found a fundamental right to abortion and struck down popularly supported measures such as informed consent and 2 day waiting periods for women considering abortion and other laws regulating the operation of abortion facilities in Tennessee.

"Tennessee is a strongly pro-life state and it is only appropriate that our public policies reflect the views of that majority," Harris said.  "It is a top priority of Tennessee Right to Life to see that the men and women who fill those seats next January are people of principle who will not only vote the right way but who will lead dramatically for the protection of the weak and vulnerable among us."
