Many people emailed and called their senators to tell them to vote no on the Defense Authorization bill. Most of the press and pundits are focusing on the don't ask, don't tell amendment or the Reid's attempt to sneak in the Dream Act to benefit illegal immigrants as a campaign ploy but not much mention of the Burris amendment to make abortions available in military hospitals on the taxpayer's tab. So there are many constituencies voicing their distaste for the bill. Maybe some were opposed to all three "extras" thrown in there to gin up the base on a variety of subjects or to throw something against the wall hoping that it sticks before election D Day. One bill ....so much to dislike.
A lefty
blog said something that I thought was interesting....
"The sad fact is that gay rights weren't the canary in the coal mine after all; abortion rights were. And that fight, like so many others, is in the third quarter with the home team losing. (The good news is that gays are fighting back much more effectively than women were able to; and gay rights are advancing while women's rights recede.)"
