Long awaited explanation from Susan G Komen on funds to PP unacceptable

While the issue of who funds Planned Parenthood may have been taken off the front burner as far as the MSM and top of the hour news...the issue of supporting the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure continues on. We do not forget. Susan G. Komen does indeed send money to the nation's largest provider of abortions . That is fact.  No pink ribbons for me. They have a pretty weak defense of why they pass on grant money and contributions from the tax payers to Planned Parenthood. They continue to put out their talking points that they give money to PP because PP uses that money for the education, screening and treatment of women in underserved areas. Well not really...

Since the Race for the Cure is in my area, I wrote those sponsoring the race affiliated with Susan G. and asked for an explanation of why I should support an organization that takes my contribution and gives it to an organization that I vehemently oppose. I got back the cursory email stating they would forward my email to the development people to give me an explanation. When time passed with no response, I wrote back reminding them that I was waiting and the race was almost upon us. They curtly informed me that their people were busy with several tasks and answers inquiries such as mine was just  one of those duties and they would respond when they had time. Wow, not good PR for people wanting us to contribute to them.

Hi Susan,

Thank you for walking to support Susan G. Komen for the Cure and our promise to end breast cancer! Thank you also for writing us regarding your concerns over our community grants to Planned Parenthood. When these grants are given, it is because the local Komen Affiliate has assessed its community and determined that funds given to Planned Parenthood are meeting an unmet breast health need in that area. Komen does not fund abortions. In the interest of wanting our supporters to be informed, I am sending you a statement below with more details on where the money goes. We cannot overlook these needs.

Planned Parenthood Breast Health and Breast Screening Subsidies
April 2011

Recent questions have arisen regarding a limited number of Susan G. Komen for the Cure® community grants to Planned Parenthood breast health programs, specifically those designed to provide screening mammograms for vulnerable populations, e.g., low-income and uninsured women.

Currently, 19 Komen for the Cure Affiliates award 19 local grants specifically to Planned Parenthood-sponsored programs in their communities to pay for breast cancer education and breast screenings.

When a mammogram is indicated, a patient is often referred to a local program, such as the state’s breast and cervical cancer program. In other cases, the Komen Affiliate’s grant to Planned Parenthood may include funds to pay for mammograms outright. When this happens, a local provider performs the mammogram, and is then reimbursed by Planned Parenthood using the Komen grant funds.

During the past five years, these grants have paid for the following education and screenings:
·         Breast cancer and breast health education for nearly 160,000 women
·         Clinical breast exams for more than 139,000 women
·         4,866 mammograms
·         Detection of 177 breast cancers

Overall, Komen Affiliates provide funding for 2,000 community programs that provide screenings, education and financial and social support to women and their families. This funding is based on a thorough assessment of the breast health and support programs available in an Affiliate’s service area.

The limited number of Komen Affiliates that fund Planned Parenthood breast programs do so after this same thorough assessment; the funds are then reviewed twice-yearly to ensure that they are being used only for their intended breast health programs.

We know breast health education and early detection programs, particularly among vulnerable populations, are essential to reduce mortality from breast cancer. Indeed, today’s five-year survival rate is 98 percent for breast cancers caught early, before they’ve spread from the breast.

Wow, this is the information I waited so long for. Shame....so this leads  to further questions. If PP has educational brochures on site and performs a topical exam and then refers out for mammograms  because regardless of what PP prez Richards says on national TV....they do not perform mammograms. Sometimes they pay the provider to do the mammogram or the provider charges the patient. Of course treatment for any breast cancer is done elsewhere because PP does not offer treatment. So basically PP gets all this money to supply brochures and do topical exams. Anyone who has attended a breast cancer luncheon is educated to doing breast self exams and learns what a lump feels like when they pass around the dummy being used and they get several brochures to take home.

Why would  Susan G. Komen not  just work directly with the county health departments since they are capable of handing out brochures, doing the topical exams, mammograms and referring for treatment when indicated and THEY DO NOT DO ABORTIONS. The whole point of having county health departments is to serve the under served.

Hey Susan G. Komen....the alliance with abortion chain Planned Parenthood smells fishy and your  long awaited talking points  do not suffice.

When you support abortion providers you are supporting abortion plane and simple. SGK is in denial!
