Country singer Rodney Atkins was adopted as an infant and grew up in East Tennessean. He discusses reconnecting with his birth mother in this article.
Atkins, now 42, had the full support of his parents in the search which he conducted through "proper channels."
42 years ago, confidential or closed adoptions were the only available option. Today, adoptions looks quite different with open, semi open adoptions being favored over confidential adoptions which are still available. The birth mother is clearly in the driver seat and many choose to meet and interview the prospective parents. They then decide how much or little contact they desire.
Adoption used to be secretive but it is an event and not a lifestyle. As Atkins points out, he is thankful to his birth mother choosing life and adoption.
"I just wanted to tell her thank you, because she had some other alternatives to end that situation," said Atkins, pausing. "I might not be here. So you don't want to take it for granted. … She kept saying, 'I'm sorry.' I kept saying, 'Thank you.'"
