Tennessee Right to Life holds annual Rally for Life in Nashvilled

 National Right to Life reports:

Congressman Chris Smith speaking to Tennessee RTL in Nashville
Supporters of Tennessee’s leading pro-life organization gathered Saturday in Nashville for the annual Rally for Life.  The event takes on even greater significance this year considering the Obama administration’s high profile support for abortion rights and Tuesday’s 40th anniversary of the 1973 decisions by the U.S. Supreme Court which legalized abortion for any reason through all nine months of pregnancy.

Additionally, the continued growth of pro-life majorities in both chambers of the General Assembly demonstrates the importance of abortion issues to the state’s voters, according to Brian Harris, president of Tennessee Right to Life.

“While the nation re-elected a strongly pro-abortion President last November, Tennesseans strongly embraced pro-life candidates from the top of the ticket all the way down,” said Harris.  “Tennessee’s pro-life majority continues to grow and we will continue to pursue public policies more in line with the pro-life views of most Tennesseans,” Harris continued.

Pro-life champion Congressman Chris Smith (R-NJ) spoke on the steps of the state Capitol. The following are excerpts from his stirring remarks.

“…The passage of time hasn't changed the fact that abortion is a serious, lethal violation of fundamental human rights.  And that women and children deserve better—much better.  And that the demands of justice, generosity and compassion require that the right to life be guaranteed to everyone, regardless of age, sex, race, condition of dependency, disability or stage of development…”

“Rather than obscure or dull our consciences to the unmitigated violence of abortion, the passage of time has only enabled us to see and better understand the innate cruelty of abortion—and its horrific legacy—while making us more determined than ever to protect the weakest and most vulnerable.”

“By now I’m sure you've weighed the personal cost and answered the call—the duty to protect—with an enthusiastic yes.  The struggle to re-establish durable protections for the most persecuted minority in America today—unborn babies—pits us against the quintessential example of wolves in sheep’s clothing and is worth any personal sacrifice or pain.”

“So be encouraged.  You are making a huge difference.  You are saving precious lives.  Despite seemingly ominous present-day signs—the re-election of the abortion president Barack Obama, public funding for abortion in the Obamacare exchanges—our powerful, non-violent, faith-filled resistance to the evil unleashed on America four decades ago is growing in public support, intensity, commitment and hope.  In adversity our faith and trust in God is tested, but it also deepens and overcomes and forges an indomitable yet humble spirit….”

“Be encouraged.  We are not only on the side of compassion, justice, and inclusion; we are on the right side of responsible science and of history.”

“Someday future generations will look back on America and wonder how and why such a seemingly enlightened society, so blessed and endowed with education, advanced science, information, wealth and opportunity could have failed to protect the innocent and inconvenient.  They will wonder how and why a Nobel Peace Prize winning President could also simultaneously have been the Abortion President.”

“You and I celebrate life.  Unborn babies are not disposable commodities.  We recognize that unborn children, like their older brothers and sisters, have inherent worth, value, and dignity. They are children, too.  If left alone to grow and mature, they too will become older brothers and sisters—and perhaps parents themselves someday.”

“We have so much to do.  In no way can any of us grow weary in doing right.  With faith in God, unceasing prayer and fasting coupled with works, a culture of life will replace this present darkness.”
